Common. 'Decompose' is a general term for breaking down into simpler substances. 'Biodegrade' specifies that this breakdown is caused by living organisms. 'The leaves will decompose over winter' works, and in this context, 'biodegrade' could also work, but 'decompose' is broader.

Common/Informal. 'Rot' is generally used for organic matter decaying, often with an unpleasant smell. While 'rot' implies biodegradation, 'biodegrade' is a more scientific and neutral term. 'The fruit will rot if left out' works, but 'This plastic will rot in a landfill' is incorrect, whereas 'This plastic will biodegrade in a landfill' is correct if it's a special type of plastic.
