Technical/geological. Specifically refers to geological periods when large amounts of carbon (as coal) were formed. Not interchangeable when describing a material simply containing carbon. 'Carboniferous period' works, 'carboniferous rock' works in a geological sense, but 'carbonaceous rock' is more general for any carbon-containing rock.
