تفاوت با واژههای مشابه
روزمره. کلیترین اصطلاح برای حفره طبیعی زیرزمینی. با 'caverns' قابل تعویض است اما 'caverns' به غار بزرگتر و چشمگیرتری اشاره دارد. 'غارها یک جاذبه گردشگری هستند' درست است، 'کاورنها یک جاذبه گردشگری هستند' هم درست است اما باشکوهتر به نظر میرسد.
Everyday. The most general term for a natural underground hollow. Interchangeable with 'caverns' but 'caverns' implies a larger, more impressive cave. 'The caves are a tourist attraction' works, 'The caverns are a tourist attraction' also works but sounds grander.
ادبی/رسمی. یک غار کوچک و خوشمنظره یا ساختار مصنوعی شبیه غار، که اغلب در باغها یافت میشود. برای سازندهای طبیعی بزرگ با 'caverns' قابل تعویض نیست. 'او گروتوی باغ را کاوش کرد' درست است، اما 'او گروتوهای کوه را کاوش کرد' معمولاً درست نیست.
Literary/formal. A small, picturesque cave or artificial cave-like structure, often found in gardens. Not interchangeable with 'caverns' for large natural formations. 'He explored the grotto in the garden' works, 'He explored the grottoes in the mountain' does not typically work.
