رسمی/ادبی. از نظر معنایی تقریبا با 'penitent' یکسان است و اغلب به جای هم به کار میروند، اما 'repentant' ممکن است بیشتر بر عمل توبه کردن تأکید کند تا احساس آن.
Formal/Literary. Nearly identical in meaning to 'penitent', often used interchangeably, but 'repentant' may emphasize the act of repenting more than the feeling. 'He was truly repentant for his actions' works well.

Formal. Emphasizes deep regret or guilt for a wrong committed, often with a sense of self-reproach. 'He felt remorseful after his outburst'.

General term for someone who commits a sin. A penitent is a type of sinner who is remorseful. 'The sinner sought redemption' works, but doesn't necessarily imply regret.
