Technical/literary. Refers specifically to a hot, dusty, southerly wind blowing from the Sahara across the Mediterranean Sea to southern Europe. Can sometimes be interchangeable with 'afer' when both refer to desert winds, but 'afer' is broader. 'The sirocco brought dust' works, 'The afer brought dust' also works.
