به سرعت حرکت کردن یا فرار کردن، به خصوص از روی عجله یا ترس.
To move or leave quickly, especially in a hurry or in fear.
«وقتی پلیس رسید، مظنونین با سرعت از آنجا فرار کردند.»
“When the police arrived, the suspects hightailed it out of there.”
«باید قبل از مهلت مقرر با عجله به دفتر برمیگشتیم.»
“We had to hightail it back to the office before the deadline.”
تفاوت با واژههای مشابه
رسمی/ادبی. اغلب به معنای فرار از خطر یا تهدید است، معمولا با حس اضطرار و ترس قویتر از 'hightail'. در شرایط فرار از موقعیت خطرناک میتوانند جایگزین هم شوند. 'They fled the burning building' درست است، 'He hightailed it to the store' درست است ولی 'fled' در این جمله بیش از حد دراماتیک به نظر میرسد.
Formal/Literary. Often implies escaping from danger or a threat, usually with a stronger sense of urgency and fear than 'hightail'. Can be used interchangeably when the context is escaping a dangerous situation. 'They fled the burning building' works, 'He hightailed it to the store' works but 'fled' sounds too dramatic.
