Formal. Refers specifically to the act or faculty of recalling past experiences, often with a sense of deliberate effort. Can replace 'memories' when emphasizing the act of remembering. 'Her recollections of childhood were vivid' works. 'Her memories of childhood were vivid' also works.

Formal/literary. Usually refers to pleasant memories of past events, often shared in conversation or writing. While related, it focuses on the act of recalling and sharing, rather than just the stored information. 'He shared his reminiscences of his travels' works better than 'He shared his memories of his travels' if the emphasis is on the storytelling.
