Formal. Can be interchangeable when referring to control over a market or product, implying that others are excluded. However, 'exclusive' often carries a connotation of high quality or prestige, which 'monopolistic' does not. 'An exclusive club' works, 'an exclusive market' works in some contexts, but 'monopolistic market' is about control. 'Monopolistic practices' can't be replaced by 'exclusive practices'.
