Informal. Can replace 'prattle' when emphasizing incoherent or nonsensical talk, e.g. 'She babbled on about her day.' Works less for continuous light chatter.

Very common. Can stand for light talk or gossip, e.g. 'The chatter in the office was loud.' Fails to capture foolishness or silliness implied in 'prattle'.
