رسمی/ادبی. نشانهای یا هشداری بودن که چیزی، به ویژه چیزی مهم یا فاجعهبار، احتمالاً اتفاق خواهد افتاد. 'Portend' اغلب برای رویدادهای مهمتر یا شومتر استفاده میشود. تا حد زیادی با 'presage' قابل تعویض است و هر دو لحن جدی دارند.
Formal/Literary. To be a sign or warning that something, especially something momentous or calamitous, is likely to happen. 'Portend' is often used for more significant or ominous events. It is largely interchangeable with 'presage', both carrying a serious tone. 'The dark clouds portend a storm' works, 'these events presage a major change' works.
رسمی/ادبی. نشانهای از یک نتیجه خوب یا بد آینده بودن. 'Augur' از پیشگویی رومی باستان میآید و اغلب به نشانه پیشگویانه یا تشریفاتیتر اشاره دارد. در معنای پیشگویی قابل تعویض است، هرچند 'augur' گاهی اوقات میتواند به فال خوب نیز اشاره داشته باشد.
Formal/Literary. To be a sign of a future good or bad outcome. 'Augur' comes from ancient Roman divination and often suggests a more prophetic or ritualistic sign. Interchangeable in the sense of foretelling, though 'augur' can sometimes lean towards good omens too. 'The success augurs well for the future' works, 'his early failures presaged his downfall' works.
