تفاوت با واژههای مشابه
تاریخی/رسمی. یک عنوان بلندپایه یا نجابت است که اغلب به معنای حاکم یا فرمانده است، اما لزوماً به نسب مستقیم از پیامبر گره خورده نیست. در حالی که برخی از شریفها عنوان امیر را داشتند، این اصطلاحات از نظر معنایی مترادف نیستند. 'امیر بر منطقه حکومت میکرد' درست است، اما 'شریف بر منطقه حکومت میکرد' به این معنی است که حاکم نیز از نوادگان پیامبر است.
Historical/Formal. A title of high office or nobility, often implying a ruler or commander, but not necessarily tied to direct lineage from the Prophet. While some Sharifs held the title of Emir, the terms are not synonymous in meaning. 'The Emir ruled the region' works, but 'The Sharif ruled the region' implies that the ruler is also a descendant of the Prophet.
