Everyday. Informal. A broader term for a state of disorder or confusion. Can be interchangeable for simpler, less serious 'tanglements'. 'The room was a mess' or 'I got into a real mess with my schedule.'

Everyday. Refers to a physical knot in string, hair, etc., or metaphorically to a difficult problem. Interchangeable when referring to a literal or very specific figurative 'tangle'. 'A knot in my shoelace' or 'a knot of emotions'.
