Can be used interchangeably if the context is just any road intersection, but 'carfax' specifically denotes four. Common/technical. A place where two or more roads, lines, or paths meet or cross. Similar to 'crossroads' but more formal and precise. Less evocative than 'carfax' for historical town centers. Example: 'Traffic lights are installed at busy intersections' works, 'The ancient Roman town was built around a carfax' has a historical feel.
