Common. The most general term for any non-human living organism, often interchangeable when referring to specific species. 'A creature of the forest' and 'an animal of the forest' are often interchangeable.

Figurative/literary. Emphasizes someone being manipulated or used by a more powerful person for their own purposes. 'He was a mere creature of the dictator' could be 'he was a mere pawn of the dictator'.
