Literary/Dated. Similar to 'dandy' but often implies a greater degree of foolishness or affectation in their preoccupation with fashion. 'Dandies' often refers to a historical period or a refined sense of style, while 'fops' can be more critical. 'The fops at the ball were ridiculous' emphasizes their silliness.

While both 'dandy' and 'beau' describe stylish men, 'beau' has the added romantic or courting context which 'dandy' does not necessarily carry. 'She was admired by many beaux' implies romantic interest.
