Common. More general than 'hypothesising', can refer to thinking about something without much evidence. Can be used interchangeably when the 'hypothesis' is more of a guess. 'He was speculating about the cause of the fire' works, 'She was speculating a complex scientific theory' doesn't.

'Scientists are theorizing about the origins of the universe' works, 'I'm theorizing why my keys are missing' doesn't.
