In chemistry, a 'compound' is a substance formed when two or more chemical elements are chemically bonded together in fixed proportions, creating a new substance with different properties. 'Mixtures' are physical combinations and retain their original properties. 'Water is a compound of hydrogen and oxygen'; 'air is a mixture of gases'.
