رایج. احساس درک و نگرانی برای رنج یا وضعیت دیگری. بیشتر به درک اشاره دارد و کمتر به غم شدید یا ترحم. «من برای قربانیان جنگ همدردی زیادی دارم» درست است، اما «او برای گدا احساس ترحم کرد» واکنش عاطفی قویتری را نشان میدهد.
Common. A feeling of understanding and concern for someone else's suffering or situation. It's more about understanding and less about intense sorrow or feeling sorry *for* someone. 'I have great sympathy for victims of war' works, but 'He felt pity for the beggar' suggests a stronger emotional reaction.
رسمی/ادبی. آگاهی عمیق از رنج دیگری همراه با تمایل به تسکین آن. قویتر و فعالتر از شفقت. «او برای بیخانمانها مهربانی احساس کرد» درست است، «او برای بیخانمانها دلسوزی احساس کرد» نیز خوب است، اما مهربانی به تمایل به کمک اشاره دارد.
Formal/Literary. Deep awareness of the suffering of another coupled with the desire to relieve it. Stronger and more active than pity. 'She felt compassion for the homeless' works, 'He felt pity for the homeless' is also good, but compassion implies a desire to help.

رسمی. ابراز یا احساس همدردی یا دلسوزی. اغلب به معنای به اشتراک گذاشتن احساس است، نه فقط احساس آن برای کسی. «او با او در مورد از دست دادنش همدردی کرد» درست است، اما «من به فقرا همدردی میکنم» مانند «من به فقرا ترحم میکنم» طبیعی نیست.
Formal. To express or feel sympathy or pity. Often implies sharing the feeling, not just feeling it *for* someone. 'He commiserated with her over her loss' works, but 'I commiserate the poor' is not natural like 'I pity the poor'.
