افرادی که در دوران فئودالیته، زمین یا مقام خود را به شرط وفاداری و ادای احترام به یک ارباب یا پادشاه دریافت میکردند.

تفاوت با واژههای مشابه
ادبی/رسمی. به پیروان یا خدمتکاران یک اشرافزاده اشاره دارد که اغلب دارای درجهای از وفاداری و خدمت شبیه به واسال هستند، اما لزوماً با همان تعهدات فئودالی یا مالکیت زمین نیستند.
Literary/Formal. Refers to followers or servants of a noble, often implying a degree of loyalty and service similar to a vassal, but not necessarily with the same land-holding or feudal obligations. 'A lord's retainers' works, but retainers don't hold land in the same way vassals do.
