Literary/sometimes pejorative. Interchangeable with 'atheistic' to describe a lack of belief in God, but 'godless' can also imply immorality or lack of religious principles, which 'atheistic' does not. 'A godless society' often carries a negative connotation, while 'an atheistic viewpoint' is neutral.

Common. Broader than 'atheistic', as it refers to a lack of religion or religious feeling, not necessarily a denial of God's existence. An agnostic person can be irreligious, but not necessarily atheistic. 'His lifestyle was irreligious' works, but 'His arguments were atheistic' focuses more on the philosophical stance.
