Common. This is the general, everyday term for the outer covering of the body. 'Derm' is a more technical, anatomical term referring specifically to a layer of the skin. 'Protect your skin from the sun' is correct; 'protect your derm from the sun' is technically accurate but unusual outside of medical contexts.
