Technical. Refers to a blood clot that forms and remains in a blood vessel, whereas an embolus is a clot (or other material) that has broken free and traveled from its original site. A thrombus can become an embolus.

Common, everyday. A general term for coagulated blood. It can be interchangeable with 'embolus' in very informal medical discussions, but 'embolus' specifies a traveling clot, while 'clot' can be stationary. 'He had a blood clot in his leg.' (thrombus) vs 'The clot traveled to his lung.' (embolus).
