You might see a crane working on its own, but a gantry implies the framework. 'The crane lifted the beam' works, 'The gantry lifted the beam' is less precise unless it's a gantry crane.

A 'gantry' is a permanent or semi-permanent structure, often for moving heavy objects, not typically for supporting workers directly. 'Workers climbed the scaffold' works, 'Workers climbed the gantry' does not, unless they are performing maintenance on it.
