رسمی/ادبی. شبیه 'hypothesizes' است اما اغلب به عقیده یا نظریهای اشاره دارد که با شواهد کمتری یا به عنوان حدس شکل گرفته است. وقتی فرضیه بیشتر بر پایه گمانهزنی باشد، قابل تعویض است. 'کارآگاه انگیزهای را حدس میزند' درست است، اما 'دانشمند قانون جدیدی از فیزیک را حدس میزند' کمتر رایج است.
Formal/literary. Similar to 'hypothesizes' but often implies an opinion or theory formed with even less evidence or as a guess. Can be used interchangeably when the hypothesis is more speculative. 'The detective conjectures a motive' works, 'The scientist conjectures a new law of physics' is less common than 'hypothesizes'.

Formal/academic. To assume or assert the truth, existence, or validity of something as a basis for reasoning or discussion, often without proof. Interchangeable when the hypothesis is a foundational assumption. 'The theory postulates the existence of dark matter' works, 'He postulates why the car won't start' doesn't.
