Common. A smaller military unit, typically part of a regiment. Not fully interchangeable as battalions are usually components of regiments, not equivalent in size or command structure. 'Three battalions make up a regiment' works, but 'the battalions marched' can refer to a smaller force than 'the regiments marched'.
