گاوی وحشی با جثه سنگین، سر و شانههای بزرگ و کوهاندار که بومی آمریکای شمالی (بیسون آمریکایی) یا بخشهایی از آفریقا و آسیا (گاومیشهای واقعی) است.

Technical. Specifically refers to the American and European species, distinct from the Asian/African water buffaloes. 'American bison' is often used interchangeably with 'buffalo' in North America. 'African buffalo' is a true buffalo, not a bison.
