It is very similar to 'distortion' for physical objects, but 'distortion' can also apply to non-physical things. 'The deformation of the bridge was visible.' works. 'The deformation of facts' doesn't.

Formal. Emphasizes presenting something inaccurately or falsely, often with intent to deceive. It is largely interchangeable with 'distortion' when referring to facts or information. 'The company was accused of misrepresentation of its financial data.' works.

Formal/literary. Implies a moral twisting or corruption of something good or natural. Much stronger and more negative than 'distortion'. 'The perversion of justice' works, 'a perversion in the sound' doesn't.
