Formal. Refers broadly to making amends for wrongdoing, often in religious or moral contexts. It can replace 'penance' in many religious discussions.
رسمی/مذهبی. بیشتر بر شرمندگی و تاسف واقعی تاکید دارد نه الزام به مجازات خود، پس کاملا قابل تعویض با penance نیست.
Formal/religious. Emphasizes sincere regret and remorse rather than acts of self-punishment, so not fully interchangeable with 'penance'. Often precedes or accompanies penance.
