Common. This is the standard English term for a Jewish house of worship and is broadly understood. It can be used interchangeably with 'shool' in formal contexts, but 'shool' is more informal and specific to Yiddish-speaking communities. Example: 'They attended services at the synagogue.' versus 'The old shool was full of history.'
