Use 'hollow' for a general dip, 'swale' for a specific, often elongated and damp natural depression. 'The children played in the hollow' works, 'The farmer dug a swale for drainage' works.

While a 'swale' is a type of depression, 'depression' can refer to a much wider range of geological features, including large basins. Use 'depression' in scientific or geographical contexts, 'swale' for smaller, often vegetated, wet areas. 'The Great Basin is a large depression in the western US' works, 'The golf course features several swales to collect rainwater' works.
