Common. Originally a narrow vertical slit in a wall, similar to an embrasure but typically narrower and often for archery. Now often used metaphorically for a way to evade a rule. For literal military openings, it's a closely related term, but 'embrasure' implies a wider, often splayed opening for guns. 'Archers fired from the loopholes' works, but 'cannons fired from the loopholes' is less common than 'embrasure'.
