Formal/literary. It is a more formal and academic term for fortune-telling, often used in anthropological or religious contexts. While interchangeable in some contexts, 'fortune-telling' is more common for everyday magical predictions. 'She engaged in divination rituals' works, 'She engaged in fortune-telling rituals' also works but is less formal.

It implies a divine source, whereas fortune-telling is more general and can be secular. 'The ancient prophecy foretold a king's return' works, 'The fortune-telling foretold a king's return' does not convey the same weight or source.
