Informal. A general term for a dollar in both Canadian and American English. It's more casual than 'loonie' and doesn't specify the Canadian dollar, but can be used interchangeably when the context is clearly Canadian currency. 'Can I borrow a buck?' works, but 'Do you have a loonie for parking?' is more specific.

Slightly dated, informal. Refers to a person with a severe mental illness or someone acting irrationally. It can replace 'loonie' but 'madman' carries a stronger, more serious connotation of mental instability. 'He's a madman for driving that fast' is stronger than 'He's a loonie for driving that fast.'
Common, informal. Refers to someone who lacks good judgment or acts unwisely. It can replace 'loonie' when emphasizing foolishness rather than outright madness. 'Don't be a fool and touch that wire' works, 'Don't be a loonie' is also fine but less common in this context.
