Formal/scientific. Interchangeable when referring to animals or plants producing offspring; not for multiplying numbers. 'Fish breed in spring' works, 'multiply numbers' does not.

Common/formal. Emphasizes spreading or growing larger more than numerical multiplication. 'Multiply business' less usual than 'expand business'.
