Formal/Literary. A very small village. Similar to 'village' but implying an even smaller settlement. Like 'village,' it lacks the specific Jewish cultural connotation. 'The old man lived in a secluded hamlet.' It cannot replace 'shtetl' when the specific Jewish historical context is paramount.
