رسمی/ادبی. معمولاً به معنای گرفتن عدالت برای اشتباهی است که به خود یا دیگری شده، اغلب با حس حقانیت اخلاقی. «او سالها برای انتقام قتل برادرش تلاش کرد» مناسب است، اما «کشورها با تعرفه تلافی کردند» این ظرافت را ندارد.
Formal/literary. Usually implies seeking justice for a wrong done to oneself or someone else, often with a sense of moral rightness. 'He spent years avenging his brother's murder' works, but 'The countries retaliated with tariffs' doesn't fit this nuance.

Formal. Means responding to an action with a corresponding action, which can be positive or negative. It lacks the aggressive or hostile connotation of 'retaliating'. 'She reciprocated his kindness' or 'He reciprocated with a harsh response'.
