Common/literary. Implies continuous, often exhausting physical labor. It is largely interchangeable with 'slaving' when emphasizing hard work, especially manual labor, but 'toiling' lacks the negative connotation of forced labor. 'He was toiling in the fields' works, 'She was slaving over her homework' also works, though 'toiling' might sound a bit more formal in the latter case.
