Common. A broader term referring to the part of a town or city next to a body of water. Can include docksides but also extends to areas with shops, restaurants, or residential buildings. 'We walked along the waterfront' works, but 'The waterfront was used for loading cargo' might be too broad if only the immediate loading area is implied.
